One of the things that has been lovely to see in recent years is the shift towards ethical and eco-conscious practices in manufacturing. The more we as consumers seek out, select, and support the brands that are making these choices, the more it will put pressure on other brands to do the same. The more we as consumers vote with our dollars for the things that are better for our world, the more it will make it an unwise and unprofitable business practice to pollute and use unfair labor practices.
Making conscious choices in what we consume is a way of practicing the yoga principle of ahimsa, or non-harm.
With this in mind, I present to you my top picks for SUP yoga wear and yoga apparel by two brands that take ahimsa seriously in all of their decisions.
Best for SUP Yoga, Paddling, & Watersports:
Waterlust is run by a team of ocean advocates. All of their apparel is made in environmentally responsible ways and each print donates 10% to a different ocean related cause. They also advocate and educate about issues impacting our waterways.
Not only will you feel good about your purchase - you’ll also feel good wearing it. Waterlust leggings, shorts, and tops, sun shirts, and sunsuits have an amazing (and flattering) fit and are made for the water so the fabric is comfortable when wet and quick drying. They are known for their ocean inspired prints, but they also have a new solid black collection that I’m excited about because I can live in those basics.
Technically, these leggings and tops could become the go to basics both on and off the water - they’re comfy and cute enough for that. But they are made for the water and they have held up to every long day on the water I’ve used them for so I put them solidly in the SUP yoga gear category in my closet.
Best for Yoga & Activewear:
We love Wolven. They are women-owned, make their fabric from recycled bottles, and they have partnered with Climate Neutral to offset their carbon footprint. They also make the most seriously buttery soft leggings, shorts, sports bras, and bathing suits ever!
I can and do use these for SUP yoga as well. The fabric is so soft that it somehow even feels nice when it’s wet. But since it is not particularly quick-drying, I prefer to wear Wolven for my off the water yoga activities like yoga and aerial yoga.
One note on fit: I personally find Wolven to run a tiny bit small so I size up one from my usual size for the perfect fit.
